Giuseppe Faiella, known to the public as Peppino di Capri, has died at nearly 87 years of age. The news was met with widespread sorrow in Naples and on the island of Capri, where a day of municipal mourning was declared.

The funeral was held in the piazzetta of Capri, where the coffin was greeted with applause by those present. Among the attendees were the singer's children, his former wife Roberta, and producer Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Peppino di Capri, born in 1939, was one of the most recognizable voices in Italian popular music. His career spanned decades, marked by hits such as Saint-Tropez Twist (1962), Roberta (1963), and above all Champagne (1973), his best-known song. The latter was chosen by director Dino Risi for a scene in the 1974 film Profumo di donna, starring Vittorio Gassman.

In 2023 he received the lifetime achievement award at the Sanremo Music Festival. On that occasion he said he had been waiting for that moment for a long time, adding that better late than never.

His songs, especially Champagne, left a lasting mark on Italian popular music and were referenced by numerous artists in subsequent editions of the Sanremo Festival.
