An amendment to the sports decree law, currently under examination at the Chamber of Deputies, provides for the closure of swimming pools equipped with suction nozzles that do not comply with safety standards. The proposal received bipartisan approval in committee, according to news agency ANSA, which also reported an associated fund of nearly 5 million euros and 37 deaths recorded over two years related to swimming facilities.

Suction nozzles are devices installed in pools for water recirculation. Regulations require them to be equipped with specific anti-entrapment systems. Biologist Saul Aiolfi, interviewed by La Repubblica, explained that devices must be in place to prevent the suction effect, while noting that for an ordinary user it is not easy to assess a pool's safety through visual observation alone.

The amended text, as reported by Il Sole 24 Ore, establishes that pools with non-compliant nozzles shall be subject to closure until the facilities are brought up to standard.
