A large wildfire is ongoing in the French region of Gironde, north of the Bassin d'Arcachon, fueled by high temperatures and dry vegetation. The flames have burned between 2,000 and 3,400 hectares of forest, according to varying estimates from agencies, in one of the most visited areas of the country.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of thousands of people, including residents and tourists. The number of displaced persons varies by source: an initial estimate spoke of around 12,000 evacuees, while later communications raised the figure to over 20,000. Campsites and a naturist village at Cap Ferret were also evacuated.

Between 500 and 700 firefighters are engaged on site in containment operations, and the fire is not yet under control.

The wildfire alert situation also affects other European countries. In Spain, several large fires have been reported, with over 22 events classified as major wildfires, and flames have caused disruptions on the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed rail line.
