Eight bathers were intoxicated by a chlorine leak in the swimming pool of a sports club in Mentana, near Rome, in the early afternoon of July 19. Among those intoxicated is a 5-year-old child, transported in red code to the Sant'Andrea hospital in Rome, and four other children aged between 10 and 15, treated in yellow code along with three other adults. According to one source, the child is not in life-threatening condition.

Bathers began experiencing symptoms around 3:30 pm, including burning eyes and throat, coughing, and shortness of breath. Upon arrival, firefighters detected a high level of chlorine emissions, leaked from the pool pump for causes yet to be determined. About 50 people were present at the club at the time, all of whom were evacuated. The facility was temporarily closed.

Four ambulances, three medical cars, and several Carabinieri patrols from Mentana responded to the scene. The club was placed under seizure for investigations by the Tivoli prosecutor's office. The most likely hypothesis at this stage is a problem with the system's motors that mix water and chlorine.
