A van carrying ten farm workers of Moroccan origin went off the road and overturned in Montesecco, in the countryside of Serracapriola, in the province of Foggia. The accident, which occurred on Sunday around 1 p.m., caused one death and injured nine workers, one of them seriously. The group was returning to the Foggia area after a day of work in the fields of Molise.

The workers, aged between 21 and 49 and residing in Torremaggiore, were all regularly employed. The vehicle, a Ford Transit, left the roadway on its own for causes yet to be determined. The most seriously injured worker, suffering from multiple trauma, was intubated at the scene and transferred to the Foggia Polyclinic, while the others were taken by ambulance to the San Severo hospital.

The mayor of Torremaggiore, Emilio di Pumpo, commented on the event, calling it a tragedy for the workers who contribute daily to the agricultural economy of the area. The Puglia regional councilors for Migration Policies, Silvia Miglietta, and for Agriculture and Rural Development, Francesco Paolicelli, stressed the need to ensure safety in every phase of agricultural work, including the transportation of workers.

Cgil and Flai Cgil of Foggia expressed sorrow over the incident and called on institutions to strengthen measures to address and prevent unsafe working and transportation conditions in the agricultural sector, especially during the summer. The accident occurred on one of the hottest days of the summer, with temperatures in the Foggia area approaching 40 degrees Celsius.
