Canada has formally joined the GCAP fighter jet program, the sixth-generation combat aircraft development project led by Italy, the United Kingdom and Japan. The announcement came during a summit held in London. Ottawa enters the program with observer status, which will give it visibility on the project's strategies and delivery plans. This serves as a basis for discussing Canada's future participation in the program.

Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto described the initiative as a response to the geopolitical dynamics involving Russia and China, attributing a political-military significance to the project.
