A forest fire has struck the area of Los Gallardos, in the province of Almeria, Andalusia, causing at least 12 fatalities and leaving over 20 people missing. Several people were in their cars attempting to flee the flames when they became trapped.

Regional authorities have confirmed that evacuations of inhabited areas threatened by the fire are ongoing. In the afternoon, approximately 50 residents of the locality of El Marchal de Lubrin were evacuated by UME military personnel due to the advancing fire.

The Andalusian government has decreed three days of mourning. As a result, numerous municipalities in the province of Almeria have cancelled public events planned for the screening of the World Cup quarterfinal match, including public viewing on large screens in squares. Citizens have been invited to watch the match at home as a sign of respect for the families of the victims.

Spanish Minister Sanz described the event as an unprecedented tragedy. The death toll remains provisional.
