According to data from the Statistics Office of the Ministry of Tourism, Italy ranks first in Europe for summer 2026 tourism, with an OTA occupancy rate of 51.2%, ahead of Spain (42.8%) and France (32.9%). The average room rate in Italy is 153 euros, lower than Spain (170 euros) and Greece (195 euros).

The highest regional occupancy rates were recorded in Veneto (57.5%), Emilia-Romagna (56.7%), the autonomous province of Trento (55.7%), and the autonomous province of Bolzano (54.9%). They are followed by Friuli-Venezia Giulia (53.7%), Sicily (53.3%), and Tuscany (52.5%), all above the national average.

For June and July 2026, increases of +13.4% and +10% respectively were recorded compared to the same months of 2025. Lake areas show the highest occupancy (54%), followed by thermal and coastal destinations (both at 51%).

International demand for Italy is reflected in a 26% increase in air searches compared to the previous year. Significant growth was observed from Poland (+76%), Germany (+66%), and Spain (+48%). Direct flight seat capacity increased by 14%, outpacing Spain (+8%), Greece (+7%), and France (+2%). Flight searches for the August 14-16 period show a +17% increase compared to the same holiday period in 2025.

Tourism Minister Gianmarco Mazzi described the summer 2026 figures as a success for tourism in Italy, citing the occupancy rate above competing countries and the growth in air searches and capacity as indicators of strong international interest. He attributed the result to collaborative work between the government, businesses, and industry operators.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commented on social media that the result rewards the beauty of the country, the quality of its tourism offering, and the work of the entire sector, thanking entrepreneurs, workers, and operators. She stated that the government will continue to support a sector she described as strategic for the economy and the country's growth.
