Three League MEPs Silvia Sardone, Susanna Ceccardi and Anna Maria Cisint wore black gags over their mouths during a protest initiative against what they call political Islam. The three parliamentarians sent a letter to President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella requesting an urgent meeting, in which they express concern over political and social models based on the prevalence of religious law over state law, which they consider subversive of the constitutional order. In the letter, the MEPs state they have received numerous complaints or threats of complaints from circles they attribute to the Muslim Brotherhood, accusing them of attempting to silence battles for freedom. Sardone stated that she and her colleagues are under police protection and have also received death threats, adding that they will not be stopped. Cisint announced that she will file an inquiry with the European Commission to ask that the Muslim Brotherhood be designated as a terrorist organization. Ceccardi referred to an ongoing process of Islamization, citing the presence of fully veiled women in cities as a possible violation of safety regulations. The initiative by the three League MEPs comes amid heightened attention in Europe on the role of political Islam, following similar appeals from other countries.
