In explaining the request, Muti stated that she has roots in Russia and cannot renounce them, expressing the desire to feel "at home." The two also indicated the intention to purchase a residence in Moscow or St. Petersburg. According to reports, the family's ties to Russia stem from maternal origins: Muti's maternal grandmother was originally from St. Petersburg, from where she emigrated with her husband to Estonia, where Muti's mother, sculptor Ilse Renate Krause, was born. In recent years, Muti's connections with Russia have reportedly intensified, including participation in public events where President Vladimir Putin was also present.
