Mary de Rachewiltz has died at the age of 101. She was a poet, writer, and translator, daughter of the American poet Ezra Pound and the principal curator of his works in Italian. Raised in Gais, Val Pusteria, she resided at Castel Fontana in the municipality of Tirolo. Over the decades she took part in the cultural life of nearby Merano, which granted her honorary citizenship and, on the occasion of her hundredth birthday, dedicated a celebratory exhibition to her.

Mary de Rachewiltz began translating her father's poems at a very young age, just over fourteen, culminating in the complete Italian publication of the "Cantos." In addition to her translation work, she left a substantial body of original writing including prose, essays, and poetry collections, among them "Maschere tirolesi" (1957), "Il diapason" (1965), "Di riflesso" (1966), the autobiography "Discrezioni. Storia di un'educazione" (1973), "Per conoscere Pound" (1989), "Riflessione" (1994), "Polittico. Poesie 1985-1995" (1996), "Radiando lui cagiona" (1998), and "Canzoniere" (2002). In 1961 she also edited, together with Vanni Scheiwiller, "Il Natale. Antologia di poeti del '900." The complete corpus of her verse was recently collected in "Processo in verso," edited by Massimo Bacigalupo and published in 2024 by Bertoni Editore.

The Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, expressed condolences for her passing, remembering her as a poet, writer, and translator with a clear and original voice. The minister noted that last April the Ministry of Culture acquired the Mary de Rachewiltz Archive and the Ezra Pound Library as part of the national heritage. The autograph papers, correspondence, and volumes she preserved will enter the holdings of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice and will be featured in an exhibition in Italy. The minister extended his condolences to the family.
