The Carabinieri del Ros carried out two arrests in Rome as part of an investigation by the Rome prosecutor's office into espionage in favor of Russia. Those arrested are two former members of the Italian intelligence services, accused of passing classified information concerning national security to an official of the Russian embassy in Rome in exchange for sums of money.

According to news sources, the main suspect is a 59-year-old former member of the intelligence sector. The investigation reportedly originated from a tip-off by Aisi, Italy's domestic intelligence agency.

In addition to the two arrested individuals, four people serving in the armed forces or the Ministry of Defense are under investigation, as reported by Il Sole 24 Ore and ANSA. According to La Stampa, there are also five additional potential Italian sources within the Ministry of Defense who may have had contacts with Russian intelligence handlers.

Regarding the methods of information exchange, Il Giornale reported that the former agents met in public places such as bars or parks, exchanging written notes and micro SD memory cards hidden in wall packages. These details have not been confirmed by other outlets.

Defense Minister Guido Crosetto declared zero tolerance toward those responsible, calling them traitors.
