Gruppo GEDI has appointed Stefano Cappellini as interim Director Responsible of the newspaper la Repubblica, with immediate effect, following the departure of Mario Orfeo, who was named editorial director of QN Media, the group that publishes Il Resto del Carlino, La Nazione, Il Giorno and QN. The appointment was announced by the publisher in an official note.

Cappellini, 51, joined la Repubblica in 2016 and was appointed deputy director in 2024, holding positions of increasing responsibility and becoming one of the reference bylines for political analysis and current affairs. Earlier in his career he served as director of Il Riformista and as caporedattore at Il Messaggero. He is also a television author and essayist, having published several books on Italian politics and society.

GEDI CEO Mirja Cartia d'Asero stated that Cappellini's solid experience, his long commitment to the newspaper and his professional qualities will allow him to guide la Repubblica with authority during this transition phase. Cappellini himself said he assumes the responsibility with enthusiasm and a sense of duty, with the aim of preserving the standards and consolidating a tradition based on quality journalism and in-depth analysis.

According to the publisher, Cappellini will hold full editorial responsibility until the definitive appointment process for the new Director Responsible is completed.

The CEO of GEDI also invited journalists to an in-editorium meeting before the summer break. According to some reports, the publisher of la Repubblica, Thodoris Kyriakou, is expected in Rome in the coming days for meetings with the editorial staff and institutional appointments, although further details have not been confirmed.
