A 24-year-old man drowned after diving into Lake Barcis, in the province of Pordenone. The incident occurred in the late afternoon on the right side of the lake, on a pier used by holidaymakers for sunbathing. The young man was a US citizen.

The deceased was a US serviceman stationed at the USAF base in Aviano, assigned to the 31st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. He was rescued after diving into the water and subsequently pronounced dead. The circumstances and cause of death are currently under investigation by Italian authorities. The Aviano base is cooperating with investigators.

The identity of the serviceman will not be released until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified. The statement was released in the evening by the Public Affairs office of the 31st Fighter Wing.

Swimming is banned in the area where the incident occurred. Lake Barcis is an artificial reservoir used for hydroelectric power generation and irrigation.

Emergency responders from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Sores were dispatched, including an air ambulance, an ambulance, and firefighters. The firefighters recovered the young man's body from the water, but there was nothing more that could be done. The Carabinieri of the Cimolais station have launched an investigation to reconstruct the dynamics of the incident and clarify the cause of death.
