Massimo Ciarelli, 43, died in a road accident that occurred on the evening of July 1st in the area between Montesilvano, Città Sant'Angelo and Silvi (Teramo province). According to the reconstruction by authorities, a Carabinieri patrol intercepted around 8 p.m. a scooter with two people on board that was traveling at high speed toward Silvi Marina. Ciarelli was driving the scooter and did not stop when ordered to by the Carabinieri, instead fleeing the scene. The vehicle traveled along several roads at high speed, including a U-turn near the "Expo 2000" area in Silvi Marina and passage through a roundabout. The passenger was subsequently dropped off by the Carabinieri in the Montesilvano area. The scooter continued, passing vehicles in the wrong direction on state road 16, until it crashed against a Carabinieri car from Città Sant'Angelo. The Road Police from Teramo attended the scene and was assigned to investigate the dynamics of the crash. The Teramo Prosecutor's Office is following the case. Witnesses were interviewed and surveillance footage from the area was acquired. Ciarelli was subject to restrictions on his freedom. In 2012, he was involved in the killing of Domenico Rigante, an ultras supporter of Pescara Calcio. He had been sentenced to 30 years in prison, later reduced to 17 years following the annulment of the aggravating circumstance of premeditation by the Court of Cassation and the sentence adjustment in 2017 by the Court of Assise of Appeal of Perugia. Last year he had obtained semi-liberty, a regime that required him to return to prison at 9 p.m. each evening.
