On Saturday evening a fire broke out at the Mammagialla prison in Viterbo. Emergency services were promptly activated: Ares 118 dispatched two rapid response vehicles and four ambulances to the scene. A total of over twenty people reported symptoms of smoke inhalation, including both inmates and prison police officers. According to available information, approximately seventeen inmates and six prison police officers were intoxicated. One inmate was transported under red code to the Viterbo hospital, while six others were assessed under yellow code. A further ten inmates remained at the facility: one under yellow code and nine under green code. A Major Emergency Unit was established with the activation of the Orte Major Emergency Plan and the pre-alert of area hospital emergency plans. Rescue teams also evaluated a possible relay system between the prison and the Viterbo hospital to manage transfers safely. The circumstances of the fire are still under investigation. According to an initial reconstruction, the blaze appears to have started following a revolt by inmates and may have been deliberately set by some of them, a circumstance not yet confirmed by the authorities.
