The Indian Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, has resigned from his post in the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The resignation came at the end of a period of mobilization by the Cockroach Janta Party, a youth movement born on social media and evolved into one of the most visible public dissent movements against the Indian executive in recent years.

The movement originated on May 16, 2026 from an ironic post by Abhijeet Dipkee, a 30-year-old student at Boston University. The initial trigger was the scandal involving several Indian admission exams, in particular the national tests for access to medical faculties, affected by allegations of information leaks and irregularities. The initial demands concerned a reform of the exam and education system, but over the weeks the movement broadened its demands to include youth unemployment, economic opportunities, and government accountability.

The name of the movement derives from a comparison made by the Chief Justice of the India Supreme Court, who had defined unemployed youth as cockroaches and parasites. The expression was reappropriated as an identity symbol and as the name of a satirical party, initially created as a social media account and soon evolved into a national mobilization network.

Protests included demonstrations, sit-ins, and hunger strikes organized in New Delhi and several other cities across the country. The main gathering took place at Jantar Mantar, where thousands of young people remained in the square demanding the minister's resignation. In the final days, protests continued despite police interventions, which used tear gas and batons to disperse protesters attempting to reach Parliament.

In his resignation letter, Pradhan stated he decided to step down to prevent the situation from being exploited by what he defined as anti-national forces. He also stated that he respects the expectations and aspirations of Indian youth.

Following the announcement, movement spokespersons declared the protests concluded, stating that the government had accepted the demands presented regarding the education system. They invited all participants to dismantle the encampments and return to their cities peacefully. Cockroach Janta Party leaders specified that the protest is suspended trusting in the government fulfilling its commitments, and that future initiatives will be communicated later.

This resignation represents the first significant concession obtained by the movement from the Modi government, which has been in power since 2014. Born from a protest over the public exam system, in a matter of weeks the movement managed to secure a significant political response from the executive.
