The United States, through Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has organized a summit in Washington to discuss transnational far-left terrorism. Italy will participate with a representative at the sub-secretary level, according to sources from Palazzo Chigi. The choice of a junior representative rather than a full minister appears to be a compromise aimed at not leaving the Italian seat empty while avoiding sending a higher-profile figure.

According to reports, Minister Molteni was initially expected to attend but will not be able to due to parliamentary commitments this week. League leader Matteo Salvini stated he does not know whether the government will send another representative.

The decision has drawn criticism from several opposition parties. Riccardo Magi, secretary of Più Europa, stated that the Italian government should not participate in what he described as a propaganda initiative by the Trump administration, arguing that there is no current transnational red threat and that the greater danger to liberal democracies is the illiberal evolution of the United States under Trump. Magi called on the Meloni government to reconsider its participation.

Nicola Fratoianni of AVS filed a parliamentary inquiry asking the government to clarify the reasons for its participation and the objectives it intends to pursue.

M5S senator Alessandra Maiorino described the possible sending of a sub-secretary as an unsettling decision that, in her view, confirms an ideological affinity between Prime Minister Meloni and President Trump.

The summit is part of a broader US initiative under the Trump administration focused on transnational far-left extremism.
