On the morning of July 4, 2026, around 7:30 a.m., in via Alfonso Capecelatro, in the San Siro district of Milan, Gerardo P., a 55-year-old man, was attacked with a knife while outside the bar "La Giada" in the company of his father. The attacker, Lamin Saidilly, a 22-year-old Italian citizen born in Conegliano Veneto of Gambian origin, approached the victim from behind with his face partially covered and without any apparent prior contact or exchange, striking him with approximately twenty blows to the head, neck, chest, and abdomen. The weapon used was a knife with a total length of 21 centimetres. The attack, recorded by the premises' surveillance cameras, took place in front of other customers. Saidilly was disarmed and restrained by several patrons of the bar, including Egyptian citizens who were present at the time. The victim was urgently transported in red code to Niguarda hospital, where he underwent surgery and was admitted to the intensive care unit. Gerardo P.'s condition, initially serious, improved and he is no longer in life-threatening danger. The investigation is being coordinated by prosecutor Elio Ramondini of the Milan prosecutor's office, who requested the validation of the arrest for attempted murder with the aggravating circumstances of premeditation and trivial motives. According to the prosecutor's reconstruction, Saidilly had planned to strike the first person who might represent an easy target. After the arrest, the 22-year-old uttered phrases such as "I had fun, as soon as I get out I'll do it again." A validation hearing before GIP Luigi Iannelli at San Vittore prison is scheduled. Saidilly's family, residing in Veneto, reported that the young man was not being treated by healthcare facilities for psychiatric problems and that he had left home about a week before the attack. Papers with disjointed phrases were found in his wallet. Searches at the parents' home did not uncover elements linking the young man to Islamic extremism circles. Investigators are assessing the possibility of psychiatric disorders. According to Libero, a previous incident in 2023 in Leeds, England, involving a stabbing during an attempted robbery has been attributed to the same individual; this information has not been confirmed by other sources. On the political side, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini commented on the event hoping that the attacker would never leave prison again. Members of the majority in the Lombardy Region and in Parliament called for strict enforcement of the Security Decree and increased controls.
