Paolo Maldini has been appointed as the new Technical Director of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). The announcement was made by FIGC President Giovanni Malagò through an official federation statement.

Maldini, former defender and captain of both AC Milan and the Italian national team, accepted the proposal from the federal president. In addition to the role of Technical Director, Maldini will also serve as president of Club Italia.

Alongside Maldini, Brazilian former player and executive Leonardo will join the federation staff in the role of advisor. Leonardo is described as a trusted associate of Maldini. Together with Malagò, the two will be tasked with identifying the new head coach of the Italian national team.

The official FIGC statement reads: "With satisfaction, the President of the FIGC, Giovanni Malagò, announces that Paolo Maldini has accepted the position of Technical Director of the Federation. Paolo Maldini will carry out this role together with Leonardo in the capacity of Advisor. Giovanni Malagò will also entrust Paolo Maldini with the presidency of Club Italia."

Regarding the choice of the new head coach, the names of Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte have circulated in the press, while some outlets have also mentioned the possibility of a third candidate. However, no official confirmation has been provided on this matter. According to some reports, the negotiation over Maldini's appointment has contributed to delaying the announcement of the new head coach.

Former national team head coach Roberto Donadoni, commenting on the news, emphasized that beyond individual names, clear ideas and programs are needed, along with patience and a willingness to delegate to qualified personnel in order to return the national team to competitive levels.
