Details have emerged from a confidential hearing given by RAI journalist and presenter Giampiero Ranucci before the Parliamentary Antimafia Commission after the explosive attack against him. The hearing, which had remained secret, took place approximately twenty days after the attack. According to documents from the Rome Prosecutor's Office cited by several outlets, Ranucci reportedly named Fratelli d'Italia undersecretary Fabio Rampelli Fazzolari and Il Giornale reporter Luca Fazzo as people whose roles warranted investigators' attention, suggesting possible leads connected to his journalistic investigations. Ranucci also reported that he had been followed. Editoriale Domani, which published excerpts from the hearing transcript, noted that the information concerning the undersecretary and the alleged surveillance produced no investigative corroboration. The Rome Prosecutor's Office ruled out political motives for the attack. The disclosures prompted a political controversy. Fratelli d'Italia expressed solidarity with Undersecretary Fazzolari, described the reports as "insidious insinuations," and demanded an apology from the presenter. Fazzolari described the accusations as a "smear." The controversy also reached Palazzo Chigi. Ranucci subsequently denied having accused Il Giornale during the hearing. The newspaper, which says it has obtained the transcript, maintains that his statements contradict that denial.
